About Reveri

What is Reveri?

Reveri is a self-hypnosis practice developed by Stanford's Dr. David Spiegel, one of the world's leading researchers on hypnosis and the mind-body connection. Sessions are guided by an AI built on his method: it asks what's going on, guides you in about ten minutes, and remembers what worked so the next session continues rather than starts over. Available on iOS and Android. No drugs, no side effects.

Is it really Dr. Spiegel?

Every session is guided by an AI built on Dr. Spiegel's method. He designed it, trained it and reviews how it works, but he isn't on the line and doesn't hear your sessions. What "remembers you" is the software, kept private to your account.

What happens during a session?

Dr. Spiegel's AI asks what's going on, then guides you into a state of focused attention, closing your eyes, letting your body float. In that state it offers suggestions aimed at what you came for, checks in with you, and brings you back out. You rate how you feel before and after, so you both know what happened, and it tells you what it wants to try next time.

How often should I do a session?

Whenever you need one, and ideally as a short daily practice. Our most successful members do a session when they feel the thing they came for, stress, pain, a bad night, and many also anchor one to a moment in the day, after coffee or before bed. Sessions are about ten minutes, so twice in a day is fine.

Can anyone benefit?

Most people do, regardless of how easily they enter a hypnotic state. Dr. Spiegel's view: "There is much to gain and nothing to lose." The seven-day free trial exists precisely so you can find out for yourself.

Will I be in control? Will I be asleep?

You are in control throughout, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, and everything happens with your consent. And no, you won't be asleep. Hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention, not sleep; most people remember everything, and you can respond to questions even when deeply relaxed.

Do I need a quiet place?

It helps. Sessions use your voice, so somewhere you won't be interrupted for ten minutes is best. If you can't speak, on a train, next to someone sleeping, you can tap your answers instead.

How do I get the app?

Reveri is a mobile app for iPhone (iOS 16 and later) and Android (8 and later). Start free on the web and continue in the app, or download it from the App Store or Google Play.

About hypnosis

What is hypnosis?

A state of highly focused attention in which the mind becomes more responsive to suggestion. It's not sleep, not unconsciousness and not loss of control. In that state the brain can change how the body processes pain, stress and other sensations. Dr. Spiegel has spent fifty years studying it and using it clinically.

Is hypnosis safe?

Yes. Self-hypnosis involves no drugs, no side effects and no dependency, and it can be done daily. Done responsibly it is safer than many medications people take for the same concerns. Reveri is a wellness product, not medical care, and not crisis support.

Is it scientifically proven?

Hypnosis is one of the most studied mind-body interventions in medicine. Dr. Spiegel has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers on it. A 2025 study in npj Digital Medicine of 84,395 Reveri members found consistent, meaningful reductions in stress within a session, and clinical studies show hypnosis can reduce pain by 30–42%.

Isn't this just placebo?

Placebo is real and so is hypnosis, and they aren't the same thing. Brain imaging shows hypnosis produces changes in neural activity distinct from expectation alone, and in controlled trials hypnosis outperforms placebo conditions for pain, anxiety and other outcomes. Dr. Spiegel has studied this distinction for fifty years, down to the biological level.

How is it different from meditation?

Meditation trains a broad, open awareness. Hypnosis is directive: it focuses your attention on a specific outcome and uses that focus to change how your mind and body respond. Hypnosis can help immediately; mindfulness takes considerable practice. Many members do both.

How quickly does it work?

Most members notice a meaningful shift within a single session. In Reveri's member data, 77% felt less pain, 84% felt less stress and 90% felt more rested after one session. Most of the change arrives in the first five minutes.

What if I can't visualize things?

Hypnosis still works. When Dr. Spiegel invites you to picture a scene, imagine being in it instead, or focus on how it feels, sounds or smells. Focus on whatever aspect of the experience comes naturally to you.

What do I do if I'm interrupted?

If it was minor: take a breath, exhale slowly, look up, close your eyes and carry on. If it threw you: start again. Nothing is lost.

Will it work for me?

What is the test at the start?

Dr. Spiegel and his late father developed the Hypnotic Induction Profile, a clinically validated measure of how you respond to hypnosis. In Reveri it takes a few minutes (your attention, your eyes, your hand) and most people find it remarkable. It tells him how to work with you.

Is everyone hypnotizable?

Everyone can benefit; the way each person experiences it varies. Hypnotizability is a stable trait in adult life, about as consistent as IQ. Most people score as hypnotizable, and those who score lower still benefit, the approach is adjusted to how you respond.

What does my result mean?

It shapes how Dr. Spiegel's AI works with you: which approaches to lead with and what to expect. It is never a grade. In his words: "Hypnosis favors experience over judgment. Think of yourself as exploring unknown territory, like being on vacation in a new place."

What if it didn't work the first time?

Then Dr. Spiegel tries a different route next time. That is the point of a practice with a guide who remembers: a session that "didn't land yet" is information, not a verdict. Interestingly, in Reveri's data, whether the first session felt like a success doesn't predict whether people come back, what matters is having a clear next step.
